Cars, New Cars vs. Used Cars |
Everyone in our society today relies on cars to get around. So, when you are in the market for a new vehicle, should you look for new cars or used cars? There are benefits and shortcomings to each.
Let's look at the benefits of new cars first. New cars are usually very dependable for at least a few years. You will not usually have to invest much in maintenance for new cars. New cars will usually go up to five years without needing major repairs, and you can usually get by with just oil changes and tune-ups.
New cars are also regularly covered under warranty. While used cars also come with warranties quite often, new cars are usually covered for a much wider variety of problems. Some manufacturers are willing to cover new cars for up to 100,000 miles, which provides a great deal of peace-of-mind for the owner.
With new cars, you are covered by "lemon laws". These laws prevent dealers of new cars of selling vehicles that are not reliable. If you purchase a new car, and then realize it is a "lemon", you have legal recourse, which is not the case with used cars.
Finally, most new cars come with free roadside assistance these days. So, if you ever find yourself stuck on the side of the road with your new car, you can get help for free. This is almost never offered with used cars.
Used cars, however, do have their benefits as well. For one, there are a whole lot more used cars out there than new cars. In fact, in 2006 there were nearly three times as many used cars sold as there were new cars. With that in mind, you can be sure that you have a greater number of options when looking for used cars.
Used cars are cheaper than new cars, to be sure. If you are not too thrilled with the idea of investing in 4 to 6 years of car payments, then used cars are probably the way to go for you.
The reliability of used cars has also improved in recent years. In addition to warranties that are sometimes offered with used cars, there continue to be a growing number of late-model year used cars on the market, which are generally still in good shape.
Used cars in recent times have also begun to be "certified" by certain manufacturers. If you look for certified pre-owned cars, you can be more confident that the vehicle will be dependable and enjoyable.
If you are looking at cars with the intention of buying one, do your research and decide if you want to go new or used. There are benefits to both. While new cars are generally more reliable, used cars are more plentiful and lower in cost. Whatever way you go, there are plenty of cars out there for you. You will never have a hard time finding cars for sale. |
