2010 BMW 5 Series Review
Editors at TheCarConnection.com drove the new 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo to bring you this hands-on road test of its capabilities. Editors assigned ratings to each of five areas-styling, performance, comfort, safety, and features-and use those ratings to compare the new BMW with other crossover vehicles. TheCarConnection.com has also compiled a full review that condenses opinions from around the Web into a comprehensive look at the 5-Series Gran Turismo.High Gear Media accepted travel expenses to attend the first press drive of the 5-Series Gran Turismo. With the 2010 5-Series Gran Turismo, BMW slices the crossover-wagon-activity vehicle segment into even thinner segments. Technically, it’s a wagon, and it’s certainly a precursor to a whole new range of 5-Series models. For now, though, the Gran Turismo has more in common mechanically with the BMW X6 and 7-Series than with the current 2010 BMW 5-Series sedan, which is an older platform in its final year of production. Priced from about $45,000, the 5-Series Gran Turismo competes with BMW’s own X5 and X6 utes, traditional wagons like the Audi A6 Avant, and the odd outlier or two, such as the 2010 Lincoln MKT.The striking 5-Series Gran Turismo blends some station-wagon and SUV cues into a shape that’s not quite sedan or crossover. In passing, the new GT shares some cues with recent Mazda hatchbacks and the Infiniti M sedans, and it’s infused with traditional BMW cues like the twin-grille nose and the "Hoffmeister kink" that links its rear pillar to the car’s rear quarters. Though its proportions lean toward those of the BMW X6 sport-ute, the GT sits lower to the ground, and its frameless doors emphasize the long descent of the roofline. Like the X6, it has a thick, tall tail, though here designers visually trim down the rear end’s heft with downturned taillamps and chrome details. TheCarConnection.com’s editors have warmed to the shape; other expert car reviewers have not. Inside, the 5-Series Gran Turismo’s dash and door panels are a great leap ahead of the former 5-Series; it reads more cleanly, thanks to simple metallic trim that delineates control areas into logical groups, as well as plenty of lavish wood and leather that arc and curve to take visual mass out of the cockpit. The gauges are bright and readable, and information and navigation directions are well integrated into LCD readouts placed below the dials. Even with its punctuation mark of a shift lever, the 5-Series Gran Turismo’s cabin feels mature, warm, and more upscale than ever.As usual, the powertrains are the real stars in this BMW. The 2010 5-Series Gran Turismo lineup in the United States will include the 550i, equipped with BMW’s 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8, with 400 horsepower, teamed to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, BMW promises 0-60 mph times of 5.4 seconds and a limited top speed of 130 mph in that edition. Though the 550i GT will be the first to go on sale in late 2009, for this road test, BMW provided GTs equipped with a new 3.0-liter, single-turbo, direct-injection inline-six that arrives in the spring of 2010. It’s a further development of the engine found in the X6 and differs from the twin-turbo six in the 3-Series in other ways. BMW says it’s the first engine it’s built that offers turbocharging, direct injection, and variable valve timing and lift, all of which improve power characteristics and fuel economy. In the 5-Series Gran Turismo, it’s easy to accept the claimed 0-60 mph time of 7.0 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. The engine’s flexible and gutsy like the turbo six in the 3-Series and mates seamlessly with the new eight-speed automatic spreading across the BMW lineup. Fuel economy figures haven’t been released. The rear-drive Gran Turismo will also add an all-wheel-drive option in mid-2010; in addition, BMW plans to offer a Sport package that tweaks the top-end speed to 150 mph on the V-8 car.Underpinning the new car is a multilink front and rear suspension, with many components made from aluminum to save weight. Active Steering is an option-it uses electronic sensors to determine steering weight and response-as are electronic shocks, dubbed Dynamic Damping Control. A self-leveling feature is incorporated into the rear suspension. Adaptive roll control puts more pressure on anti-roll bars to stiffen lateral response, and finally, Driving Dynamics Control-familiar from the M3 and 7-Series-lets drivers choose settings for throttle, transmission, steering, and traction control response. In more than 150 miles of driving around metropolitan Lisbon, the various electronic systems give the 5-Series Gran Turismo good ride and handling, with the usual caveats that electronic systems can feel less smooth and overly responsive compared to conventional shocks and steering. The Comfort mode’s ride softens considerably without bounding too much on freeways, though steering response slows too far down. The GT’s best in Normal mode unless you’re attacking seriously challenging roads, where the Sport mode stiffens the car from rolling too deeply into corners, and the steering quickens and stiffens to controllable levels. It’s missing the sixth sense that used to link BMW drivers to the road, that seat-of-the-pants feel that electronic controls wipe away completely. But the electronic aids widen the Gran Turismo’s driving palette to suit most drivers and do a technologically amazing job of dialing in steering feedback and ride control 95 percent of the time. The 2010 5-Series GT has a long wheelbase, a flexible rear hatch that opens like a trunk or like a hatchback, a second row of seats that rivals some airline’s first-class accommodations, and customizable cargo space. Its slightly elevated seating position in front matches well with comfortable, snug-fitting chairs. The console is narrow enough for driver and front passenger to expand their footprint, and the shoulder and headroom are superb. There’s enough space to lift an elbow without hitting the other front-seat passenger. In back, it’s even more luxuriant. The second-row seat slides on a track 4 inches to and fro, as passenger and cargo needs change. With the front seats in the rearmost position, the Gran Turismo has as much rear-seat legroom as the 2009 BMW 7-Series, leaving 15.1 cubic feet for luggage in the trunk. With the seat positioned far forward, luggage space increases to 20 cubic feet. The backseats also fold down-nearly but not quite flat-for 58 total cubic feet of stow space, and they can fold individually for split cargo/passenger room so that a backseat passenger can access the trunk space without leaving the car. A bench seat is standard on cars sold in the United States, but the Gran Turismo will have an option for a pair of bucket seats separated by a console, and they look and feel like the best airline seats you’ll find. It’s easy to enter and exit the GT, too, since the step-in height is closer to that of an SUV than a sedan.Amping up the 5-Series Gran Turismo’s usability is a bifold tailgate and a low loading height for cargo. The tailgate opens as a conventional trunklid or as a large hatch. The rear seats can be powered forward from trunk-mounted buttons, and the angled cargo dividers behind them can be raised to vertical or folded almost flat ahead. There’s also a cargo cover that detaches and stows under the cargo floor. In theory and in practice, the flexible cargo hold probably offers more storage options than many crossover vehicles. The new 5-Series Gran Turismo has plenty of standard safety features, including front, side, and curtain airbags. Also standard are anti-lock brakes; stability and traction control; Brake Standby and Brake Drying, which are said to improve stopping performance; and wheels and tires in 18-, 19-, and 20-inch sizes that can be ordered as run-flat tires. BMW Assist and accident notification hardware are also included. Safety options will also include night vision, a head-up display, rearview and side-view cameras, dynamic cruise control, park distance control, and adaptive headlights with automatic high beams. Of these, the park-distance control may be the most useful feature, since the Gran Turismo feels wide like an SUV on narrow streets. High seating and low step-in height create good visibility to most angles. TheCarConnection.com will reevaluate the Gran Turismo’s safety rating when testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is completed.Among the 5-Series GT’s new features are a revamped iDrive system, which TheCarConnection.com’s editors have experienced in the 2009 BMW 7-Series. It’s improved and far easier to navigate, and redundant buttons make the cabin more pleasant to operate. Also standard on the 550i GT will be a panoramic sunroof. A navigation system is offered, as are a music hard drive and satellite radio. BMW plans to offer a rear-seat entertainment system with twin LCD screens and a luxury rear-seat package with massaging functions built in, as well as heating and ventilation; a premium audio package with USB connectivity; soft-closing doors and a power liftgate; and a cold-weather package. Satellite radio will be offered, along with integration kits for smartphones like the iPhone to control audio and phone functions via the GT’s iDrive controller and voice-activation interface.

2011 BMW 5 Series Review
TheCarConnection.com’s editors have prepared this preview of the 2011 BMW 5-Series sedan and wagon from information and photos released by the manufacturer. TCC’s editors will update this 5-Series preview as BMW releases more data, and will bring you their Bottom Line road test summary as soon as vehicles are provided for test drives.Say auf wiedersehen to today’s BMW 5-Series. A new lineup of sedans and wagons is brewing, and BMW has released the basics on the new four-door sedan due to arrive in the U.S. next year as a 2011 model. The new version shares running gear with the 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo driven by TheCarConnection.com earlier this year; it also has some close relationship with the latest BMW 7-Series, which was new for 2009. Though it’s new from the ground up, the latest 5er still competes against the sedans you’d expect: the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the Audi A6, the Lexus GS and the Infiniti M.As it did with the latest 7-Series, BMW’s left the oddly proportioned themes championed by former design chief Chris Bangle on the drawing-room floor. This time, the 2011 5-Series reacquaints itself with classically BMW proportions-lean glass areas, a steeply raked windshield, and a long-hood stance that’s much more muscular than today’s car. The 5-Series’ wheelbase has grown longer, giving BMW chief designer Adrian von Hooydonk more expanses and surfaces to give the mid-size BMW a distinct identity. BMW says the 5’s forward-tilted grille, tightly cornered Hofmeister kink (the curve at the roof and the rear pillar), and the gently curves shoulders create a standout shape that’s scented with coupe-like appeal. Inside, the 5-Series benefits from a fresh take on function: the old car’s dark, overstyled shapes have been smoothed out and cleaned up, with handsome expanses of wood trim outlined in delicate metallic lines. Four large gauges have an LCD sub-panel that can indicate navigation and secondary displays. It’s a "fresh ambiance," BMW says, and TheCarConnection.com’s witnessed in the Gran Turismo, the 5-Series’ new interior is more open and instantly appealing than the prior car. Per the BMW philosophy, controls for the driver only are to the left of the steering wheel; shared controls for driver and front passenger rest in the center stack and console. As with the 5-Series Gran Turismo, the new 2011 5-Series sedan will come to the U.S. with a pair of engines. The future will bring a normally aspirated, 3.0-liter in-line six with 240 horsepower; at launch, BMW will offer a turbocharged version of the same engine that will produce 300 hp and 300 pound-feet of torque. The optional powerplant will be a twin-turbo, 4.4-liter V-8 with 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, BMW expect a 0-60 mph time of 5.0 seconds, and a top speed of 130 mph (which rises to 155 mph with an optional sport package). That’s nearly as fast as today’s 2010 BMW M5 sedan. Both engines are fitted with direct injection and both are coupled to either a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic.Electronics invade the new 5-Series’ driving systems, as they have in the 2010 Gran Turismo. The basic suspension setup uses control arms and links, instead of the classic BMW strut. Steering is electronically assisted, and there are multiple systems to control all manner of driving inputs, starting with optional Integral Active Steering, which can dial in small directional changes to the rear wheels to turn tighter corners. Electronic Damper Control gives the shocks infinite variability, based on acceleration and cornering forces, while Active Roll Stabilization gives a twist to the anti-roll bars when the 5-Series heads into corners and needs more roll stiffness. Driving Dynamics Control allows the driver to select Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+ modes for steering feel, throttle quickness, and transmission shift quality. The latter three e-systems are bundled together under the Adaptive Drive moniker-steer over to TheCarConnection.com’s review of the 2010 BMW 5-series Gran Turismo for opinions on how they affect handling in that closely related car. Finally, there’s a virtual limited-slip differential: when the 5-Series’s traction control is disabled and the car’s anti-lock braking sensors detect wheelspin, small amounts of braking are applied to the wheel to simulate a mechanical limited-slip device. Braking is nearly as advanced, with electronic controls to help reduce the effects of brake fade, to assist heavy braking under fast deceleration, and to dry the rotors in wet weather. The 5-Series will even hold the brakes on a hill to prevent rollback.BMW promises more interior room and comfort in the 2011 5-Series. With manual-shifting cars, a split center console divides the front power-operated bucket seats. Automatic-equipped cars get a single console with twin cupholders and a key holder. A third cupholder sits behind BMW’s iDrive controller. In terms of seating space, BMW says the rear-seat legroom has grown by 0.5 inches; they promise the trunk is nearly the size of the 2010 Ford Taurus trunk at 18.2 cubic feet, and have fitted a folding rear seat for more cargo flexibility. The 2010 BMW 5-Series sedan scores poorly in driver-side crash tests from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). BMW is intent on improving those scores with the new 2011 sedan. It features dual front, side and curtain airbags standard. There are options for a rearview and "Top View" cameras for parking assistance, and a Parking Assistant device that calculates if the sedan will fit in a space. Active cruise control, lane-departure warning and blind-spot warning systems will be offered, along with a night-vision setup, adaptive headlamps with automatic high beams, and Collision Warning braking, which senses imminent impacts and can apply full brake force to prevent them. The myriad of driving and safety electronics find road-trip companions inside the 2011 BMW 5-Series’ cabin. Basic equipment includes telescoping steering; 10-way power front seats; an AM/FM/CD audio system with auxiliary input; power windows, locks and mirrors; cruise control; and ash trim. Leather seating is available on the 535i and standard on the 550i, with Nappa leather an option. BMW’s iDrive controller is standard on all sedans, and offers streamlined usability, along with a larger screen. The optional DVD navigation system can be controlled through iDrive along with audio systems, optional iPod connections, and even with the available head-up display.

2010 BMW 5 Series Review
TheCarConnection.com has researched a range of road tests on the new BMW 5-Series to bring you some of the most useful observations from other reviewers. Then here, TheCarConnection.com’s editors bring you their own overall Bottom Line assessment, including firsthand driving impressions. The 2010 BMW 5-Series sedan and wagon return for a final model year, while the new 2010 BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo points the way for an all-new, mid-size BMW range. The Gran Turismo’s based on new-generation sheetmetal and running gear; this 5-Series sedan and wagon are part of the last-generation BMW lineup and will drift out of showrooms by summer 2010.The 2010 5-Series sedan and wagon bear the hallmarks of an older school of BMW styling-one that’s being left behind. With elaborate curves and sculpturing on the body sides, the 5-Series looks disjointed and complicated from some angles. It’s far from the conservative streak seen in BMWs past, and it’s been controversial on this car and on others sharing its theme: the 7-Series, the 6-Series, and the first-generation Z4. Wagons look a bit more balanced. The interior’s one arc after another, with a deep black hole in the dash for the LCD navigation screen and a general favoritism for exotic surfaces instead of functional spaces. It’s challenging as a piece of art-it’s far more challenging as a place to do driving work. The 2010 5-Series sedans and wagons aren’t the best-looking, most practical or the best values in their class, but they’re a joy to drive. Following the recent 300-horsepower, 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder optional engine upgrade, there’s not much to report for the 2010 BMW 5-Series lineup besides some new wheels. The base engine on the 5-Series is the 230-horsepower, 3.0-liter six in the 528i; The 300-hp turbo six arrives in the 535i; and there’s also a 360-horsepower, 4.8-liter V-8 model called the 550i. Each engine comes with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions, and for the available Sport Package, 535i and 550i models come with paddle shifters. All-wheel drive is also offered on six-cylinder models in the 5-Series line, the 528xi and 535xi.The 2010 535 xiT Sports Wagon model brings more useful utility while offering the same luxury and performance as the sedan. The Sports Wagon has excellent handling and braking, along with a firm but absorbent ride and impressive standards of refinement inside the cabin. However, with all-wheel drive-requisite in the 2010 BMW 5-Series Sports Wagon-the steering feel isn’t quite up to the standards of the rear-wheel-drive (sedan) model.Seating in either the sedan or Sports Wagon is commendable. The front seats in the 2010 BMW 5-Series are among the best in any mid-size luxury sedan. They’re very firm and supportive yet comfortable; in back, they’re also quite cozy, but there’s a bit less space than most cars this size. The front seats are among the best in any luxury vehicle in this price range.Standard safety features on the 2010 BMW 5-Series include front side airbags, tubular head-protecting airbags for front and rear outboard occupants, and electronic stability control. Rear side airbags are optional. However, the surprising news is that the 5-Series did not perform well in crash tests. When the federal government tested a 5-Series, it earned a three-star rating in frontal protection for the driver-the lowest mark typically awarded-but five stars in the other dynamic tests. The bad news didn’t end there; the insurance-industry-supported IIHS found the 5-Series sedan to be just "marginal" in side protection and "acceptable" for the sedan and wagon in the seat-based rear-impact test. The array of standard features on the 2010 BMW 5-Series is as extensive as rival models, but it’s the astonishing list of high-technology options that really differentiates it from the competition. They include an active steering system that may be a driver’s aid or a lifesaver, adaptive bi-xenon headlamps, a head-up display, active cruise control, high-beam assist, front and rear parking aids, night vision, a lane-departure warning system, heated rear seats, and a power rear sunshade. BMW’s pesky iDrive is standard, and its unintuitive operation blemishes the high-tech fun.
