2010 Nissan Sentra Review
For this review that covers the Nissan Sentra along with its sporty SE-R and Spec V variants, TheCarConnection.com has surveyed a wide range of review sources and picked out the most useful information. Plus, experts from TheCarConnection.com have driven most of the models in the Sentra lineup and bring their firsthand observations to this Bottom Line, written to help you make the best purchase choice. The 2010 Nissan Sentra slots above the especially frugal Versa in size and price, yet offers a lower price and better fuel efficiency than mid-size sedans like the Altima. With rather tall proportions for a sedan and a broadly arched roofline, the 2010 Nissan Sentra looks like a shorter, smaller car than it really is from a distance. Many of its cues, like the flared-outward headlamps and prominent flanks in at the top of the rear fenders, are borrowed from Nissan’s larger Altima and Maxima. Inside, the design is chunky and a bit more angular than you’ll find in other new vehicles; a center stack of controls flows downward, housing the shifter, while upright seating affords a good view out.Several different powertrains are offered on the 2010 Sentra, and each gives this small sedan a very different personality. The 2.0, 2.0 S, and 2.0 SL versions feature a 140-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, with either a six-speed manual (S) or the Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) in the S or SL. The sporty SE-R trim brings a larger 2.5-liter engine making 177 hp, matched only to the CVT. At the top of the line, the performance-focused SE-R Spec V gets a 200-hp, 2.5-liter four, hooked up to a six-speed manual gearbox. With either the manual or CVT, acceleration is adequate but not particularly spirited on any of the standard models, though the Sentra has enough responsiveness for everyday driving. In either CVT model, aggressive acceleration prompts a slight lag as the transmission ramps up, followed by a raucous drone from the engine. The CVT, in particular, doesn’t fit the sportier character of the SE-R. For those who want a sportier feel, our pick of the bunch is the Spec V, which gets substantial upgrades to the suspension and brakes, along with appearance upgrades inside and out. The SE-R remains front-wheel drive, as does the rest of the Sentra lineup. The Sentra is delightfully refined compared to most other models of its size and price, with a nice, settled ride and good isolation of road and wind noise. Don’t expect sports car handling in the non-enthusiast models, and you won’t be disappointed. The top SE-R Spec V has a performance-tuned suspension that’s firmer but still quite pliable and reasonably comfortable. While other compact models are offered as coupes or hatchbacks, the Sentra is only offered as a sedan; it’s a very well-designed cabin, though, with generous appointments even in base 2.0 and 2.0 S models. Materials feel about right for this price range, while all the examples TheCarConnection.com has seen have been very well put together. The Sentra gets top "good" ratings in frontal offset, side, and rear tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and nearly all top ratings from the federal government, with only one four-star result for rear passenger side-impact protection. Side and side-curtain airbags are standard. But Nissan is a step behind some other automakers in safety features. For 2010, Nissan now offers electronic stability control as an option across the more affordable models, but it’s standard on 2.0 SL, SE-R, and Spec V models. However, anti-lock brakes remain optional, not standard, on the base 2.0 models. Toyota, for instance, includes ABS and stability control on its Corolla and much-less-expensive Yaris models. In its base 2.0 form, the Sentra makes a good commuter car, with a strong list of standard features like power windows and locks, air conditioning, tilt steering, split-folding backseats, and a 160-watt CD sound system. Moving on up to the 2.0 S or 2.0 SR trim gets you more conveniences, like a center console, keyless entry, and a trip computer, while the high-end 2.0 SL adds leather and Bluetooth. However, the SL can only be had with the CVT. At the top of the range, the SE-R gets a sport-tuned suspension, big 17-inch alloy wheels, special badging, sport seats, and a number of other extras. The Spec V takes the performance package another step, with extra bracing, upgraded brakes, summer performance tires, driving lamps, and exclusive lower bodywork. The audio system offered on both top models includes a color display screen with USB interface. Newly optional is a navigation system with five-inch screen; other top desirables include Rockford Fosgate audio, satellite radio, and Intelligent Key keyless entry and start.

2010 Nissan Frontier Review
Based on several driving experiences with the Nissan Frontier, the editors of TheCarConnection.com compiled their impressions and drive notes into a Bottom Line summary. Then, for more information, the research team at TheCarConnection.com searched the most reputable review sources and included highlights to help show how the 2010 Nissan Frontier matches up against other trucks.Riding on the same frame as the large Nissan Titan, the 2010 Nissan Frontier is hardly a compact. More appropriately, it’s a mid-size truck, a full class larger than real compacts like the Ford Ranger. That said, the Frontier picks and chooses traits from compact and full-size trucks. In Crew Cab form, its interior closely rivals that of full-size pickups—so does its extensive feature set—yet in some of its most basic models, the Frontier is offered with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine.Designers can’t do much with the shape of a pickup; there’s the cab and the bed, and the proportions are quite rigidly set. But with the Frontier, Nissan managed to fit in some carlike curves, along with styling cues that are in line with more luxurious SUVs. The large chrome-bar grille is sophisticated, while the beveled window frames and flared wheel wells give it a chunky, serious appearance that’s also tough and charismatic. Inside, the design is quite straightforward, with inexpensive-looking materials but a tasteful layout. There’s no V-8 offered in the 2010 Nissan Frontier, but you’re not likely to miss it. The 4.0-liter V-6 that’s standard on most Frontiers and optional on some of them makes 261 horsepower, giving the Frontier strong acceleration and good passing punch. Towing capacity rates up to 6,500 pounds. Throws are rather long for the manual transmissions, but they work well, as does the five-speed automatic, which responds nicely to quick passing needs. We don’t recommend the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder in the Frontier unless you live in a relatively level area and won’t be driving too often with heavy loads. If you can live with its limited 152 hp, the four-cylinder gets fuel economy figures of 19 mpg city, 23 highway, while the V-6 ranges down to 14/19 mpg.King Cab and Crew Cab versions of the 2010 Nissan Frontier are offered (there is no basic short-cab version), but with each body style, you can choose between rear- or four-wheel drive. If you need easier backseat entry and enough space for two adults, especially for extended trips, you’d better go with the Crew Cab; the King Cab configuration allows for occasional backseat passengers with small front-hinged rear access doors and flip-up backseats, but they’re puny and uncomfortable for adults. On either body style, the front seats afford a nice, upright driving position with good outward visibility, and the seats are very supportive and comfortable.Cargo-hauling is, of course, a big priority for shoppers looking at the 2010 Nissan Frontier. Cargo beds for the Frontier are six feet long at most, so it will never be a true rival to full-size trucks. But the Frontier offers several features not otherwise found in pickups in this price range. The cargo bed includes a factory-applied spray-in bedliner. For those who need to secure small or heavy items in back, the available Utili-Track cargo tie-down system is recommended. The 2010 Nissan Frontier gets acceptable but not excellent crash-test ratings, with a mix of four- and five-star ratings in federal frontal tests and five stars in NHTSA’s side test. Two-wheel-drive versions get a three-star rollover rating. In IIHS tests, the Frontier rates "good" in frontal offset but only "poor" in the seat-based rear-impact test. The IIHS hasn’t retested the Frontier since side airbags and side-curtain bags became standard. Otherwise, the Frontier has a respectable safety-features list, though electronic stability control isn’t offered on four-cylinder models (it’s standard with the V-6). Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control testify to the Frontier’s off-roading credentials. The base four-cylinder Frontier XE models are quite basic—they don’t include air conditioning, power windows, or even a tilt steering wheel. SE models are better equipped, while LE models get all the popular equipment, like larger alloy wheels, fog lamps, chrome trim, tie-down cleats, the Utili-Track system, cruise control, keyless entry, power accessories, and a four-speaker sound system. Options include a limited-slip differential, leather seats, a high-powered Rockford Fosgate audio system, and a choice of either XM or Sirius Satellite Radio. Serious trail-crawlers will want to check out the PRO-4X Off-Road model.

2010 Nissan Murano Review
In order to present a comprehensive take on the 2010 Nissan Murano and how it measured up to other mid-size crossover vehicles, the editors of TheCarConnection.com have driven the Murano and examined it inside and out. And to bring you the most comprehensive review, TheCarConnection.com has combed the Web for the most useful information from other reputable sources. With underpinnings based on those of the mid-size Altima sedan, the 2010 Nissan Murano is a bit more stylish and sportier than the typical crossover vehicle. With seating for five, it does not offer a third row of seating, off-road ability, or impressive towing capability. Think of it more as a tall, style-conscious wagon that doesn’t instantly evoke images of strollers and animal crackers. The Murano’s smooth, unified styling inside and out is part of what makes it so appealing to shoppers in the first place. With last year’s redesign, the Murano received a significantly revamped interior, with an instrument panel that’s a little more distinctive and echoed some of the features in Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand, as well as the last Altima redesign. The Murano’s center stack of controls has a new two-tiered design, with a screen (nav system or trip computer) up top and audio/climate functions below. In between, it gets a set of menu buttons and a controller for screen-based functions. The gauge cluster is also revamped, replacing a flat set of instruments with a multilayered arrangement of hooded dials. Overall, the Murano now has a richness in its materials that stands out in the practically minded crossover class.A smooth, powerful 3.5-liter V-6 engine, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) provides the power for all Muranos. The S and SL versions come with front-wheel drive and an optional all-wheel-drive system, while the top LE version has standard all-wheel drive. Overall, the Murano is one of the best CVT-equipped vehicles TheCarConnection.com has driven, with smooth, unobtrusive operation and less of the rubber-band feel that you get with smaller engines and CVTs. Only if you drive the Murano fast on a curvy road do you miss real gears; while some other CVT vehicles, like Nissan’s Maxima, offer six simulated ratios, the Murano doesn’t. That said, the Murano’s powertrain is responsive and leans toward doing the right thing, complementing the responsive handling and firm but absorbent ride. Fuel economy also tends to be decent for a V-6 vehicle of this size, with ratings of 18 mpg city, 23 highway whether with front- or all-wheel drive. While the Murano is very satisfying in terms of styling and performance, it’s a little disappointing for space and utility. The front seats are comfortable and adjustable for a wide range of drivers, the backseat has just enough legroom, and the seating position feels somewhat low. Three adults can fit across if need be. Due to the roofline, the cargo area is a bit small with the second row up in place, and the cargo floor is higher than you might guess from the outside.Depending on which safety agency you check with, the 2010 Nissan Murano either gets decent but not great scores, or the best possible results. The federal government gives the Murano an average four stars in frontal impact but five stars in side impact tests, but the Murano gets "good" scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in frontal offset, side, and rear impact tests, and it’s even an IIHS Top Safety Pick. Electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags are all standard. The 2010 Murano is offered in S, SL, and LE trims. S and SL models are available with front- or all-wheel drive, while the top-of-the-line LE is AWD-only. The base 2010 Nissan Murano S comes with a cloth interior and 18-inch alloy wheels but is well equipped, with cruise control, the Intelligent Key entry and starting system, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, and a six-speaker sound system with six-disc changer and auxiliary input. SL models add a reclining rear seatback with power return, plus leather trim and steering-wheel audio controls, as well as fog lamps. The top LE model now includes the dual-panel moonroof packs on the most desirable features like flashy 20-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, heated front seats, xenon headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate, keyless start, wood trim, and a garage door opener. It also gets a Bose audio system with nine speakers, XM Satellite Radio, and dual subwoofers, plus a Bluetooth hands-free interface, which is optional on a Technology Package in other models. Other top options include a a rear DVD entertainment system, and a navigation system, including Music Box hard-drive storage.
