2010 Volkswagen GTI Review
The editors at TheCarConnection.com have driven the 2010 Volkswagen GTI to bring you this hands-on review of its styling, performance, features, safety and comfort. Along with the road test, editors researched opinions from other respected Web sites to bring you a comprehensive full review of the new VW GTI for 2010.While its Golf companion undergoes a name change for 2010, VW’s GTI stays pretty much the same for the new model year. Aside from the sheetmetal changes that accompany the new Golf lineup, the GTI retains its entertaining handling, sweet turbocharged engine, and available dual-clutch transmission, as well as a choice of three- and five-door hatchback body styles. The new GTI carries a base price of $23,290 and competes against the likes of the Honda Civic Si, MazdaSpeed3, and MINI Cooper. The 2010 Volkswagen GTI hatchbacks share the same basic styling as the lesser Golf-which is to say, upright and a little dowdy, compared to the likes of the Mazdaspeed3, though the three-door is the less frumpy of the pair. It’s all in the details, distinguishing the GTI from the new Golf. The new wider grille gets a black honeycomb texture and a GTI badge, along with the traditional red-stripe outline. Black side skirts, new tail lamps, and a body-color hatchback-mounted spoiler hint at the performance under the newly creased hood. Inside the GTI, there are traditional plaid seats, a flat-bottomed three-spoke steering wheel in leather and aluminum with red stitching, and tidy GTI badges sprinkled around the cabin and on the deeply sculpted sport seats. The interior’s been cleaned up for the new model year, and a big LCD screen dominates the center stack and controls a new audio setup. VW’s distinct touch for high-quality interiors is evident here, with lots of richly textured plastic and soft-touch surfaces.A single turbocharged 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine pulls the 2010 GTI up and away from the rest of the Golf lineup. The engine’s a torque machine, putting out a wide, flat powerband that’s not at all peaky as some turbos can feel. It’s teamed with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a dual-clutch six-speed gearbox, in which twin clutches alternate and pre-select gearchanges like an automatic, but with faster-than-manual shift speed and without a clutch pedal. The six-speed manual has a vague lever feel and a light clutch action; TheCarConnection.com prefers the dual-clutch transmission. It’s entertaining to paddle through gears, and it delivers better acceleration and fuel economy. With the manual transmission, VW promises 0-60 mph times of 6.8 seconds and a 130-mph top end, along with 31/21 mpg fuel economy. With the dual-clutch gearbox, 0-60 mph comes in 6.7 seconds and fuel economy jumps to 32/24 mpg.Handling is a strong point with the GTI. Its electromechanical power steering has a well-sorted feel, and the ride is taut, not jarring. The front strut and independent rear suspension absorb big bumps with nary a crash or bang, and braking on TheCarConnection.com’s test car feels strong and controllable. The GTI adds to the stock Golf an electronic limited-slip differential called XDS, which helps it push through corners better by shifting power to the front wheel with more traction. The GTI wears 17-inch wheels with all-season tires that can be swapped out for slick, painted 18-inch wheels and summer tires. The 2010 GTI fits enthusiastic drivers well. The sport front seats are thickly bolstered and shift eight ways-though TheCarConnection.com’s editors wish the three adjustment types (two levers and one big knob) could join up with each other in a mutually agreeable location. They offer plenty of head- and legroom, but tall drivers up front will cut into the legroom in back. There’s a little less space back there than expected, and knee room in back can be an issue. Headroom is quite good, though an "easy entry" seat belt holder on two-door models doesn’t make the climb into the back much easier. The GTI’s rear seats get their own armrest and adjustable headrests, and fold flat to open up the cargo area to a considerable size. The upright shape and sizable glass areas give the GTI great visibility, and the feel isn’t unlike that of the MINI Cooper. The 2010 VW GTI hasn’t been crash-tested yet, but as it’s very similar to the prior Golf/GTI duo, it’s likely to repeat the four-star ratings for frontal impact and five-star ratings for side impact from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the Top Safety Pick designation awarded to it by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Standard features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and brake assist, as well as tire pressure monitors and active headrests. Rear side airbags are an option in the four-door GTI.The 2010 GTI is on par with the tech-friendly competition in terms of features. All GTIs come equipped with 17-inch wheels and performance tires, high-capacity brakes, sport suspension, metal-trimmed pedals, and monochromatic exterior paint schemes-in addition to air conditioning, cruise control, and a rear defroster. Also standard are an eight-speaker, AM/FM/Sirius audio system with touchscreen controls, a six-disc in-dash changer and USB and Bluetooth connectivity. For 2010, the GTI offers a new 18-inch alloy wheel package, available with summer performance tires, and a navigation system with an SD slot, a 30GB hard drive for storage, and DVD playback. A premium 300-watt audio system is an option. An Autobahn package adds sport seats, leather trim, and a power sunroof.

2010 Volkswagen Golf Review
The editors at TheCarConnection.com have driven the 2010 Volkswagen Golf to bring you this hands-on review of its styling, performance, features, safety and comfort. Along with the road test, editors researched opinions from other respected Web sites to bring you a comprehensive full review of the new Golf for 2010.The 2010 Volkswagen Golf returns with some styling changes and a name change. For the last few years, Volkswagen experimented with the old Rabbit nameplate in the United States, but it’s abandoned that badge with the new model, reverting to Golf for both the three-door and five-door hatchbacks. The compact Golf comes in either body style, and with a choice of four-cylinder gas and diesel engines. Manual and automatic gearboxes are offered, along with a dual-clutch transmission in the TDI diesel. The new Golf starts from $17,490 for the two-door, with the four-door starting at $19,190, and the TDI diesel beginning at $21,990. Its primary competition? The Honda Civic, Kia Forte and Kia Soul, Mazda3, and Ford Focus.Performance enthusiasts will instead want to check out the 2010 Volkswagen GTI, which pairs the Golf’s hatchback body style with more satisfying hardware and extroverted cues. TheCarConnection.com reviews the 2010 VW GTI separately. It’s a bit difficult to tell the difference between this sixth-generation Golf and the car it replaces. There are plenty of small design variations, but the overall mechanical package and the general shape of the car remain unchanged. It is conservative and boxy-but not unappealing in its own German way. There’s the traditional shape, a legacy of 30 years, but it’s now crisper with some interesting creases on the hood, a new front end with a wider grille and halogen headlamps, and a small spoiler at the hatchback hinge. Diesel TDI Golf hatchbacks also get oval fog lamps and optional xenon headlamps. The overall look is a little wider, a little more balanced, and mostly evolutionary. The Golf’s cabin bears more of a modern imprint, thanks to a new dash with even better textures and looks than the outgoing car.The 2010 Volkswagen Golf can be had with either a gas or diesel engine-and it’s the diesel that gets TheCarConnection.com’s nod. The five-cylinder gas engine is powerful enough for moderate use; it delivers 170 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, but its response is flat and unexciting. The gas-powered two-door offers a vague-feeling five-speed manual or a fine six-speed automatic; the four-door gas-powered Golf is only available with the automatic. It will accelerate to 60 mph in about 8 seconds and hit a top speed of 120 mph, plenty fast for average drivers, and fuel economy improves to mid-pack at 23/30 mpg with an automatic transmission. The clear winner here is the 2010 Golf TDI and its clean-burning diesel engine. It offers less on paper, at 140 hp, but with its 236 lb-ft of torque, it performs only a touch slower than the gas-powered Golf, with quicker in-city feel. The TDI’s very muted diesel clatter sounds a bit more engaging, even, and it delivers 30/42 mpg and a 0-60 mph time of 8.6 seconds. The TDI is offered with either a manual or dual-clutch gearbox, and the winner is the latter transmission. The paddle-shifted DSG box is a delight, with quick changes up or down the diesel’s admittedly shorter powerband. Handling is a strong point of any Golf; electric power steering has a well-sorted feel, and the Golf’s ride is taut, not jarring. The front strut and independent rear suspension absorb big bumps with nary a crash or bang, and braking on the cars tested feels strong and controllable.Comfortable seats and quality feel in the cabin make up for a little less interior room than the boxy shape implies. The Golf’s front seats give great support, and the driver’s seat helps you get comfortable with plenty of adjustability, but the controls are in three different locations: fore/aft at the right-front corner of the seat, a lever on the left side that raises and lowers the bottom cushion, and a big knob to change the backrest angle at the left rear of the seat. The rear seats have adjustable headrests and an armrest, and they fold down almost flat to give access to the cargo area. Rear-seat legroom can be an issue when tall drivers sit up front, and there’s noticeably less knee room than in the Civic or the Kia Forte. Headroom is quite good, though. Throughout the cabin, the quality of the materials is high. The view out is good, but the base of the windshield is rather high, a result of European pedestrian collision standards.Safety equipment is extensive in the 2010 Volkswagen Golf, but the new vehicle hasn’t been officially crash-tested yet. However, it’s very similar to the outgoing model, which earned four-star ratings for frontal impact and five-star ratings for side impact from NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Unusually, the previous Rabbit model earned the Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), with all "good" scores. Standard features include six airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and brake assist. Rear side airbags are an option in the four-door Golf. With the latest edition, the 2010 Volkswagen Golf’s features list has grown more competitive with the tech-happy entries from American and Korean automakers. Standard features include power windows, locks, and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; power locks; and an AM/FM/CD/MP3 player with an auxiliary jack. The Golf TDI diesel adds on an LCD-screen music interface, a six-disc CD changer, and Sirius Satellite Radio, along with a multifunction steering wheel. A sunroof is optional across the board, as are Bluetooth connectivity and heated seats. The TDI model can be equipped with a 300-watt Dynaudio Lite audio system that sounds crisp and clear, and worth the added premium over the base system. Lastly, Volkswagen offers a navigation system on the new Golf; it has a 30GB hard drive for music and maps, DVD playback, an SD card slot, and USB connectivity.

2010 Volkswagen EOS Review
TheCarConnection.com has read through a wide range of reviews from around the Web and handpicked highlights for a full review. The editors of TheCarConnection.com have also driven the 2010 Volkswagen Eos and sum up their driving impressions and comparisons to rival models in this Bottom Line. The 2010 Volkswagen Eos is a folding hardtop convertible that seats four and is perfect for cruising the cafe strip. Like most convertibles, the Eos is more enjoyable with the top down, but it’s better than most when the weather turns cold and damp.Styling is one of the low points for the 2010 Eos, which derives its name from the Greek goddess of the dawn. The model doesn’t strike out in any new directions for VW and can look a little ungainly from some angles, especially the way its proportions fit together with the top up. However, its interior feels a step above most other Volkswagen models, with a streamlined look and upgraded materials. For 2010, Volkswagen reduces the Eos’ available trim levels to two options: Komfort and Lux. Also, all 2010 Volkswagen Eos convertibles come with the same engine: a 2.0-liter, 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder with plenty of torque across the rev-range, strong thrust, and a brisk 0-60 mph time of 6.4 seconds. This fuel-efficient mill can be matched with a choice of a six-speed manual or dual-clutch transmission, the latter having the ability to be shifted like a manual without the clutch pedal. One of the Eos’ best attributes is its handling, which is relaxed enough so that you can enjoy the convertible experience but still firm enough to power through tricky corners. Taking fuel economy into consideration, the Eos is impressive at 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. When compared to other hardtop convertibles such as the Volvo C70 and Chrysler Sebring, the cargo area is a larger 6.6 cubic feet with the top stowed, which is impressive though hardly outstanding. In less than 25 seconds, a total of eight electric motors work in conjunction to unlatch the roof from the windshield header and flip and fold it under the metal trunk lid. The convertible roof also has a setting that opens the front section only like a sunroof.Safety is a strong card for the Eos, which boasts as standard traction control, head/thorax airbags for front seat passengers, and a pop-up roll bar located behind the rear seats. The 2010 Volkswagen Eos also gets a rating of "good" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for front and for side impacts. The 2010 Volkswagen Eos has been slightly updated for the latest model year, with new chrome accents for the Lux model, which also offers optional 18-inch wheels and a sport suspension. Standard on all models are Bluetooth connectivity and a touchscreen interface for the stereo, as well as a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel and instrument cluster. Also, iPod connectivity is a stand-alone option, and lastly, Volkswagen removes three color options and adds one: white gold.
