Kapsch Launches Next Generation MNCU R1551 for Transportation Infrastructure at 15th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems

17 Nov 2008

5.9 GHz DSRC interoperable platform supports secure and anonymous wireless communications.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 17, 2008 -- Kapsch TrafficCom Inc., international supplier of innovative road traffic telematics solutions, today launched its updated Multiband Configurable Networking Unit (MNCU) R1551, a wireless communications solution for transportation infrastructure at the 15th Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress. The MCNU R1551 supports Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) and industry common protocols for all vehicle communication utilizing the 5.9 GHz Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band.

The MCNU offers 5.9GHz for protected, low-latency safety applications to municipalities as well as operators of municipal wireless networks. It supports transportation management, safety and security applications that can achieve dramatic improvements in vehicular safety, and reduces the number of deaths and injuries on the road. MCNU installation on intersection traffic poles, street signs and highways deployed within all major VII test beds proved the technical viability of 5.9 GHz within the transportation industry.

"5.9 GHz is the standard around which cooperative infrastructure safety applications, and electronic payment and tolling, will come together," said Justin McNew, CTO of Kapsch TrafficCom Inc. "The Multiband Configurable Networking Unit is an important advancement within transportation management, safety and security, and we are proud to be the roadside equipment provider at the ITS World Congress where we will show case a fully integrated demonstration of 5.9 GHz VII technologies in Manhattan and on Long Island Expressway."

The Multiband Configurable Network Unit (MCNU) R1551 has several improvements from the original R1500 deployed in California, Michigan and New York VII test beds. Customer feedback and field performance have led to improved maintenance and usability of the RSE platform.
MCNU supports ITS Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) transportation management, safety, and security applications including:

  • Electronic Toll Collection
  • Transit Signal Priority
  • Vehicle Safety/Crash Avoidance
  • Emergency Signal preemption
  • Traffic and Traveler Information
  • Commercial Vehicle Wireless Roadside Integration
  • Automotive OEM/Telematics
