Throughout his career David James has not only made some cracking saves, but he now wants to save the planet. The England no.1 at the age of 37 has now traded in his BMW 7 series for a Chrysler that runs on rapeseed oil, and is leading the way for footballers to go green. At the age of 37, David James cheerfully admits he has always had an obsessive personality and has dedicated himself to reducing his carbon footprint, urging others to follow in his footsteps. This has lead to David prowling the family home like a domestic penalty area, turning off lights whenever possible. These lights are of course low-energy!
The environmentally friendly car is a start, James explains, "When I was living in Manchester and playing for City, I had a high performance BMW which was a gas-guzzler. Then when I moved to Devon to be with my girlfriend, there was a lot more recycling and such going on, and she opened my eyes to it."
"After joining Portsmouth, I started doing a column with a newspaper that got me to talk about environmental issues and how football could be a bit greener. I soon realised the main one was my car - I was doing, and still do 50,000 miles a year, so when I went online for a carbon calculator I realised 40% of my CO2 emissions came from driving. The government is requesting a 20% reduction in the first instance, so that was easy. Using the rapeseed oil instead of petrol brings it right down."
In conjunction to football caring for the environment and going green shows a completely new face to football and the Premier League. However the only way to make David James a real revolution on and off the field is when more and more footballers follow him and start swapping their 4x4s and sports cars for bikes!
