Palm Springs, CA (PRWEB) September 24, 2009 -- Architectural Digest, The International Magazine of Design, Editor-In-Chief Paige Rense and her panel of senior editors have featured Mark Anthony Puopolo’s desert retreat known as Hamrick House, in its October 2009 issue as part of its ongoing Open Auditions competition. "The minute I stepped onto the property, I was awestruck," designer Mark Anthony Puopolo recalls of his first glimpse of a 1942 house in Palm Springs by John Porter Clark and Albery Frey. He decided to buy it almost immediately and dedicate himself to reviving the 3,580-square-foot-residence. Aiming for period inspired interiors, he installed a new living room fireplace that closely resembled the one seen in old photos. Other parts of the house were updated, including the kitchen, (now visible from the living room), the lanai was enclosed, and a pool was added. "With no question, it was my most challenging project," Puopolo says. (Text courtesy of Architectural Digest)

After an extensive year long restoration, the Boston-born designer’s home was awarded Class I Historic Site status by the Palm Springs Preservation Board and Palm Springs City Council. "Hamrick House is a spectacular property with breathtaking views. I share this important recognition with my dedicated, professional team without whom the rebirth of this unique home would not have been possible, states Puopolo. I am grateful to Paige Rense and the panel of senior editors at Architectural Digest for this prestigious recognition. For me, this is a dream come true."

The Mediterranean/Spanish Revival home was built by motion picture magnate John Hamrick and his wife Fannie. It was designed by John Porter Clark and Albert Frey, local architects of national prominence, and represents a transitional piece in Clark and Frey’s work. The property sits prominently on a hillside overlooking the city, Coachella Valley and San Jacinto Mountains. Property guests indulge in splendor with classic design and timeless architecture. The city landmark has become well-known as a backdrop for glamorous photo shoots, celebrity soirees, and the design conscience visitor interested in rest and relaxation in a completely private serene setting.

Architectural Digest held the publishing industry’s first-ever Open Auditions for residential design. Hundreds of professionals and non-professionals, from as far away as Mexico, the Philippines, Australia and Venezuela, lined up at Los Angeles Pacific Design Center to show their portfolios to a panel of Architectural Digest judges headed by longtime Editor-In-Chief Paige Rense. Architectural Digest Editor-In-Chief Paige Rense describes Hamrick House Palm Springs as "remarkable." Twenty-two outstanding designs-living rooms, dining areas, bedrooms, kitchens and overall architectural design- are announced on the magazine’s Website. Designs will also appear in future issues of the magazine. Concurrent with judges’ picks, Architectural Digest is inviting the public to cast its vote, on a room-by-room basis. The magazine has featured Hamrick House’s renovated kitchen on its Website and the classic designed living room in the magazine.
