Car, Saving Your Car from a Worse MPG Rating

In today's world of rising gas prices, American's are searching for ways to spend less money on the gas they buy for their car. While some are able to purchase new cars, or hybrid cars that have better gas mileage, many feel stuck; they cannot buy a new car, but they want to see their miles per gallon raise, and the amount they spend on gas go down. While you can't "raise" the mpg you car was built with, it is easy to take a few steps to ensure that you are not wasting excess amounts of gas while you are spending time in your car.

One way to save gas is to go easy on the stop and go driving. When viewing the miles per gallon ratings for any car, the city miles per gallon rating is always lower than the highway miles per gallon rating. This is because of the constant stop and go driving associated with city driving. Starting up your car for a short distance, while constantly touching both the gas and brake pedals forces your car to work harder. Forcing your car to work more uses up gas more quickly, and lowers the miles per gallon rate that your car gets. Taking the bus, or walking to certain areas that you can do so will help to save gas and money, and grabs you some extra exercise along the way.

If you're worried about the miles per gallon that your car is getting, drive the speed limit. It may sound simple, but driving the speed limit consistently can help your car work less. The more that your speed is changing, the more your car as to work to get it back to a certain point. If you are consistently driving the speed limit, your car does not have to deal with the extra work that speeding induces, along with the extra work of breaking to get back to a certain point. While also saving tickets and pull overs, driving the speed limit and not speeding allows your car to get the most out of it's mpg.

Another way to save gas is to turn your car off. This may sound awkward, but when you are waiting in your car to pick someone up, or are waiting at a long stoplight, or find yourself waiting in a long fast food line, turning your car off can actually save a minimal amount of gas. Make sure that you will be waiting more than a minute or two, however. If you're turning your car off and on for 30 seconds, you may be doing more harm than good. Long periods of idle time, however, can benefit from turning your car off, simply because not having your car run can save mpg.

Just because a new, economical mpg car is not available does not mean that gas consumption has to stay at a high level. These small but simple changes can help to lower the amount of gas used by your car per month, and in turn, lowers the amount spent on gas for your car.
