You Are a Part of Your Car
When the buyer shows up to evaluate your car they will be evaluating you as well. Are you well groomed and well taken car of. It is likely that your car is as well. If you do not take time to care for yourself what are the odds that you have taken good care of a car. There will also be an exchange of information. They will ask several questions about the history of the car and its performance. Be open and forthright when you sell a car. If the buyer gets a feeling of dishonesty they are likely going to move on.
The Test Drive
Never let a potential buyer drive the car alone. It would be nice to trust everyone, but many people have been robbed while selling a car. Often times the buyer will need you to direct them if they do not know the area. Have a pre-planned route in mind for this scenario. If your car doesn't have a lot of power, don't take a buyer up a steep hill. If your suspension is not what it once was, do not take them through a parking lot with speed bumps.
The Beginnings of the Deal
This is the start of the excitement when you sell a car. The buyer has decided they like the car, and they make an offer. You should expect this to be lower than your list price. Negotiations are part of the process when you sell a car. You can respond in a couple of different ways. If it is close enough for you, great. Negotiations are over. If it is too low for you to sell a car at that price, you can counter offer. Always be clear about your price and any conditions of that price. It is important to remember to stay calm. It is not an argument, it is a negotiation to sell a car.
The Details
Often times there are other details than the price to be negotiated when you sell a car. Where will the car be picked up or delivered? How will the payment be made? Is the sale contingent on any repairs? It isn't a good idea to have to many things that can change when you sell a car. The best scenario is when both parties are present and cash or a cashiers check is handed over for the signed title. If repairs need to be made they should be made voluntarily by the owner and then the transaction should be completed. Another option is to reduce the asking price when you sell a car by the cost of repairs.
After the Sale
Now that you have completed the sale make sure to handle finer points. The title should be signed over to the new owner and given to them. Call and cancel the insurance on that vehicle. |
