Volkswagon, The history of the Volkswagon Passat |
The Volkswagon Passat joined the Volkswagon legacy starting in 1973 and has conserved its momentum as being one of the top German cars that are being sold internationally. Germany holds strongly onto its family sized cars, therefore promoting the Volkswagon Passat as a family car and was built by Volkswagon AG. Its relatives at the Volkswagon design factory ater the Volkswagon Golf and the Volkswagon Jetta and the Phaeton. It is currently being produced in the factories in Emden, Mosel and Zwickau in Germany.
Since the Volkswagon Passat is an internationally recognized car and is highly desirible, it is known under other nicknames to make it more culturally appealing to other countries. Therefore, the Volkswagon Passat is also known as the Dasher, Santana, Quantum, Magotan, Corsar and Carat. It traditionally has kept its name, the Volkswagon Passat, in the European Union and in North America (excluding Mexico). Passat can be translated literally to trade wind in German.
The Volkswagon Passat has gone through various changes. The Volkswagon Passat has always been a family car and continues to be for the modern family. The first generation of Volkswagon Passats was rather small yet fitting a five person family inside of it. The second generation of the Volkswagon Passat increased its body size to upgrade it to a mid size to large family car from a compact to small family car.
The Volkswagon Passat means a lot to the German car undustry. After its major success with the Beetle, it needed a car that could continue the Beetle's legacy. Even more importantly, the Beetle was in existence for forty years before the Germans came out with the Volkswagon Passat. Therefore the Volkswagon Passat had to revive the German car market, highlighting that Germany still had new, innovative and creative cars to offer to the global market. Unfortunately, the previous models that the Germans tried to export including the Volkswagon Type 3, the Volkswagon Type 411 and the Volkswagon Type 412 were not major successes. When the Volkswagon Passat arrived, things seem to have quickly turned around for German cars as the Volkswagon Passat became an international superstar success.
The Volkswagon Passat and its sister car the Volkswagon Passat Golf were creations from the expertise gained when the Volkswagon Group purchased Audi in 1964. The new technologies that arose from this change of hand included front wheel drive and a water cooled engine. A car even more closely related to the Volkswagon Passat is the Audi 80 or the Audi Fox as it is commonly referred to as. The two have shared a quite familiar history until the year 2005. The Volkswagon Passat since its remodeling and advancemen in technology and design has been able to fiercely and successfully compete with its European rivals.
The Volkswagon Passat has continued to be very successful and a reliable family car that many families do in deed prefer. The history of the Volkswagon Passat should be coined as the savior for the Volkswagon Group due to its present in the seventies and how it revived them. |
