2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review
The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee might be the best thing to emerge from the wreckage of the old DaimlerChrysler. When the companies divorced in 2007, Chrysler got custody of some of the pieces it needed to build a new sport-utility vehicle. It’s the best Grand Cherokee yet—so much for broken homes.
Fundamentally, you wouldn’t recognize the Grand Cherokee as a country cousin of a Mercedes. But as the Chrysler 300 owes some genetic material to the Benz E-Class, the Cherokee rides on some of the architectural goodness that underpins the Benz M-Class—with its own powertrains, interior,and styling, of course.
The combination of American flair and some German engineering does amazing things for the Cherokee, giving it a newfound feel that almost masks its considerable toughness. It’s still an off-roading SUV—but with the vastly improved ride, steering, and soft-touch sophistication of a crossover. Its four-wheel-drive systems hit the sweet spot of usability for casual off-roaders, but on-road drivers get even more attention. This might be the first Grand Cherokee that feels better on pavement than off.
The Grand Cherokee also marks the debut of Chrysler’s first new V-6 engine in a decade. It’s good enough to make the optional V-8 an afterthought to anyone except the big spenders eager to inject some dollars into the Obama economy.
Chrysler’s survived—and it’s incredible the Grand Cherokee has turned out so well, considering all the corporate agita. It’s even more impressive than it looks, driving and feeling better than some of the toughest competitors who’ve sailed through troubled times without all the Congressional circuses. Priced from about $31,000 to well over $40,000, the Grand Cherokee reclaims some best-in-class wins from a group of crossover utes that includes the Honda Pilot, the Ford Explorer, and the Volkswagen Touareg.

2010 Jeep Patriot Review
TheCarConnection.com has researched a range of published road tests from top-tier sources in order to bring you all the most useful information on the 2010 Jeep Patriot. Editors from TheCarConnection.com have used their firsthand impressions of the Patriot to compile our own authoritative take in this Bottom Line.With the shift to crossovers and smaller SUVs, it is appropriate that the 2010 Jeep Patriot sits on a car platform. It is mechanically similar to both the more softly styled Jeep Compass and the more carlike Dodge Caliber, but the Patriot gets boxier, chunkier styling that both looks better and is more functional than either of its platform-mates.For 2010, the Jeep Patriot remains relatively untouched compared to last year’s model. For this year, we see the return of the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 158 horsepower in the base Patriot Sport 4x2, but it still provides barely adequate performance. The 172-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that’s included in the rest of the line is considerably more energetic but not peppy. Both are offered with a five-speed manual or CVT automatic, and the Patriot can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. Both engines can be very loud during hard acceleration with the CVT, as it allows the engine to rev near redline for a sustained period. This is still the case, even though the Patriot received a number of small changes last year to combat this issue, including a new engine compartment and interior floor insulation to reduce noise.Parking an off-roading SUV can be the stuff of nightmares, but with clearly defined corners, the Jeep is easy to park and fits into small spaces, thanks to its compact-car size. Dynamics and maneuverability, surprisingly, are strengths. The 2010 Jeep Patriot has good, communicative steering, and although the body leans some, it doesn’t seem out of place on a curvy road.The Patriot’s seating is well laid out; the front seats aren’t that supportive, but due to the boxy shape, there’s plenty of headroom in front, plus enough headroom and legroom in the back for adults. Just two adults will fit comfortably in the backseat of the 2010 Jeep Patriot, due to the narrow body and lack of shoulder room inside. When it comes to the interior, it’s hard not to mention the word "plastic" when describing almost any item. In this way, the Patriot’s interior is basic and sturdy—looking—though not wholly unattractive. The plus side of all this plastic trim is that if you do take it off-roading and track mud everywhere, it’ll be a lot easier to clean than carpet or leather. Additionally, the cargo floor is rubberized and cleans up easily. Other standard features include a rechargeable flashlight stored in the rear cargo area and speakers that can fold out from the back hatch (i.e. facing away from the car) for tailgating entertainment.To prove that the Patriot is not just another urban runabout hiding underneath a big SUV body, Jeep is offering a Trail-Rated package for the 2010 Patriot. This includes a low-range transmission, skid plates, heavy-duty cooling, and hill descent control. Buyers opting for this package will also get an extra inch of ground clearance, thanks to the trail suspension system.When it comes to safety, the 2010 Patriot fares well in the federal government’s crash tests, with four- and five-star ratings for frontal protection and five stars for side impact. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards the Patriot with "good" scores in frontal and side tests. Roof strength testing also yields a result of "good." The 2010 Jeep Patriot comes with a very generous list of standard safety features for the price, including electronic stability control with electronic roll mitigation, front side airbags, and side curtain airbags.The base-level Sport model comes rather simply equipped, with manual-winding windows, but air conditioning and a CD sound system are standard. For power accessories, heated leather seats, keyless entry, cruise control, a 115-volt power outlet, and other extras, you’ll need to step up to the Limited.

2010 Jeep Compass Review
TheCarConnection.com has looked at a wide range of road tests from top-notch sources in order to bring you an accurate assessment of how the 2010 Jeep Compass matches up with other possibilities. And to wrap it all up into a one-page take, the editors or TheCarConnection.com have included their own firsthand driving impressions and advice here in this Bottom Line.The 2010 Jeep Compass wears a traditional Jeep face, but this crossover struggles to find its own identity among the different Jeep offerings. With a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine and styling that borrows bits from sleeker crossover wagons and rugged traditional Jeeps—plus mechanical underpinnings shared with the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Patriot—the Jeep Compass doesn’t leave a strong impression.Last year, Chrysler tried to spruce up the Compass, which is a good thing since it was a little drab inside. It’s still no attention-getter, but these updates included a redesigned instrument panel with a smoother look and chrome accents, an updated center console with a split lid for added storage space, and door trim panels featuring padded armrests.TheCarConnection.com’s editors note that the Compass is not particularly quick with the larger 2.4-liter, 172-horsepower engine, let alone the smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 158 horsepower. Interestingly, there is only a 1 mpg highway gain for the smaller engine when equipped with the five-speed manual transmission. Both engine options on the Compass are also available with an optional CVT. The CVT, however, tends to exacerbate the unrefined nature of Chrysler’s four-cylinder engines. Jeep does offer AutoStick, which makes the gearbox shift more like a traditional fixed-gear transmission. Handling, however, is a bright spot; the Compass is very maneuverable and steers most of the time with the accuracy and precision of a small car while riding pretty well.For a relatively small, inexpensive vehicle, the Jeep Compass provides comfort that’s more than acceptable, with plenty of room for four and even five in a pinch. The roof is tall, and this helps enhance the spacious sensation, though problems do exist inside the cabin of the 2010 Jeep Compass. There are issues with the plastic surfaces, which don’t exactly have a high-quality feel. Last year Chrysler added more sound insulation to help reduce noise, while revised suspension tuning helped provide a smoother, more comfortable ride.Although the Compass has no problem tackling light off-road situations like getting through deep snow or negotiating a two-track to a campsite (with the available Freedom Drive I, which includes a full-time, active four-wheel-drive system), hard-core off-roaders will want to steer clear of the Compass.Performance in most government crash tests has been good. Standard safety features on the 2010 Jeep Compass include side curtain airbags, Brake Traction Control, a driver-controlled three-mode Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation, and Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with rough-road detection. Front-seat -mounted side airbags are optional. New for 2010 are active head restraints for both the driver and the front-seat passenger, making the Compass even safer.The very extensive options list on the Compass includes Bluetooth connectivity, Sirius Satellite Radio, 18-inch wheels, all-terrain tires, a moonroof, and an upgraded audio system with six-disc CD changer. A remote start system and an automatic climate control system are now also offered.
