2010 Mercury Mountaineer Review

TheCarConnection.com has driven the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer—including those powered by V-6 and V-8 engines—and brings you advice on whether to pick this model over other SUVs. And to help provide a well-rounded presentation on the Mountaineer, TheCarConnection.com has looked at a range of other firsthand reports to compile a conclusive review. The 2010 Mercury Mountaineer, to put it bluntly, is a 2010 Ford Explorer, rebadged and presented with slightly different trim and details. The Explorer isn’t a bad place to start, but it’s worth noting that this is a more traditional, truck-based SUV design, outclassed by many of the more modern and carlike passenger-oriented models. However, with three rows of seating, V-6 or V-8 power, and available all-wheel drive, the Mountaineer is a reasonably appealing vehicle altogether. All of Mercury’s current products are lightly dressed-up Ford models, with different front and rear details, slightly different sheetmetal in some cases, and a lighter, more lavish interior look. The 2010 Mercury Mountaineer is no exception; Mercury’s waterfall grille and softer front end help make the Mountaineer appear just a little more carlike. Two different powertrain choices are offered in the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer. The 4.0-liter V-6 brings adequate performance, but it’s a little too coarse and rough. The available 4.6-liter V-8 provides better performance with a smoother character and real-world fuel economy that’s almost as good. The V-6 comes with a five-speed automatic, and the V-8 is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.  Both are available in rear- or all-wheel-drive versions. Overall, the Mountaineer feels like a truck, but it’s smooth, stable, and responsive for something that weighs 5,000 pounds. The 2010 Mountaineer can be configured to be either a five- or seven-passenger vehicle, and when equipped, the third row can be power operated. The Mountaineer is quite roomy inside, with a good driving position. Second-row occupants will also find plenty of space, though adults will have trouble entering or exiting the third row, let alone fitting in it. Ride quality is quite good, though—credit the Mountaineers SUV’s independent rear suspension. The cabin feels nicely appointed, with a high-quality sensation, though up close the materials themselves could be better. For a vehicle that is geared toward family use, safety is extremely important, and here the Mountaineer comes through on most counts. The Mountaineer offers canopy side curtain airbags and electronic stability controls to help improve passive and active safety. Crash tests aren’t class-leading, but they’re good, with top five-star results from the federal government in frontal and side impacts and "good" and "acceptable" ratings from the IIHS in frontal offset and side impact tests, respectively. The 2010 Mercury Mountaineer is available in base trim or as the up-level Premier edition. The Mountaineer takes advantage of the Ford parts bin and is available with Ford-exclusive technology like Sirius Travel Link and SYNC, which uses a touchscreen and Bluetooth to control the vehicle’s entertainment and communication systems. The Mountaineer also adds a capless fuel filler system, 20-inch wheels, and new option bundles like a Navigation package and the Moon and Tune Elite package. Other options include heated leather seats, a moonroof, power-adjustable brake/accelerator pedals, and power running boards.

2010 Mercury Milan Review

TheCarConnection.com has driven the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid to bring you this hands-on review that covers styling, performance, safety, utility, and features from on-the-road observations. TheCarConnection.com’s editors also researched reviews from other sources to give you a comprehensive range of opinions from around the Web-and to help you decide which ones to trust. High Gear Media drove a manufacturer-provided Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid to produce this hands-on road test. Both restyled and extensively refreshed with new powertrains, the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid are remarkably good mid-size sedans that should be better known than they are. Although they’re mechanically identical to the Ford Fusion and Fusion Hybrid models, the Milan’s cleaner exterior and more stylish interior set it apart, taking it a step up. Starting at $21,860 ($31,915 for the 2010 Milan Hybrid), the Milan line competes in the hotly contested mid-size sedan market with cars like the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Chevrolet Malibu. There are multiple versions and options for the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid, including front- or all-wheel drive, four- or six-cylinder engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and a hybrid model-although not all combinations are available. All-wheel drive, for instance, is available only with the V-6, and if you want a manual gearbox, that limits you to the four-cylinder.The base 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine delivers 175 horsepower, and can be matched with a standard six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The 3.0-liter V-6 cranks out 240 hp, and comes only with a standard six-speed automatic-although it offers no manual shifting options besides "drive" and "low." Best fuel economy figures for the standard Milan are 22 mpg city, 31 mpg highway for the four-cylinder with the six-speed automatic; specifying the six-speed manual subtracts only 2 mpg from the highway rating. Adding the V-6 engine exacts a penalty, with the front-wheel-drive version rated at 19 mpg, 27 mpg, and the all-wheel drive even lower at 18 mpg city, 25 highway. The 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid is the range’s clear fuel economy champion. It’s rated at a stunning 41 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, for a combined EPA rating of 39 mpg-a much better rating, it’s worth noting, than the 2010 Toyota Camry Hybrid. Only available as a high-spec front-wheel-drive model, the hybrid-electric drivetrain pairs a specially modified version of the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electronically continuously variable transmission (eCVT). Inside this complex piece of equipment are electric motors that can either deliver power or recharge the battery, depending on the demands placed on the car, the battery’s state of charge, and many other variables. The 2010 Milan Hybrid can run in all-electric mode at speeds as high as 47 mph, and it drives "like a regular car," with few of the oddities found in other hybrids. That said, it’s as much a statement as an investment in economy, since it’s fully $10,000 more than a plain-Jane Milan with the four-cylinder and six-speed automatic. The 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid are notably good on the road, with four-wheel independent suspension providing handling that’s among the best for family sedans. In fact, handling should be a major reason to consider the Milan over blander competitors like the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. The drive is more engaging, and ride quality is smooth and drama-free, although some reviewers consider the electric power steering numb.Inside, the 2010 Mercury Milan and Milan Hybrid offer spacious accommodations with ample legroom and lots of space for cargo. Adults fit fine in the rear seats, and all five seats are comfortable. While the interior isn’t quite as luxe-looking as that of a Chevrolet Malibu or Honda Accord, it’s modern and stylish.Four-wheel disc anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, as well as side and curtain airbags, are standard on every 2010 Milan and Milan Hybrid. For every trim level, AdvanceTrac electronic stability control is now an option. The Milan 2010 gets a five-star rating for frontal driver and passenger impact tests and driver-side crash protection, along with four stars for passenger side-impact safety, and it’s been named an IIHS "Top Safety Pick."For 2010, the optional Voga Series trim package takes the car to a new level. Available only on the Premier models, it consists of unique carbon fiber interior trim, leather seats and door inserts of a very stylish cashmere color, and unique Voga badges inside and out. Ambient LED lighting in a variety of colors is available, and Premier Series models come standard with Sirius Satellite Radio.

2010 Mercury Mariner Review

TheCarConnection.com has driven the 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid to bring you this hands-on review that covers styling, performance, safety, utility, and features from on-the-road observations. TheCarConnection.com’s editors also researched reviews from other sources to give you a comprehensive range of opinions from around the Web-and to help you decide which ones to trust. High Gear Media drove a manufacturer-provided 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid to produce this hands-on road test. The 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid are solid, stylish five-passenger compact SUVs that were completely updated for 2009. Although they’re nearing the end of a model life that began a decade ago, Ford continues to add features. New for 2010 are five driver aids: blind-spot warnings in the mirrors, the MyKey programmable key, a rearview camera, Ford’s well-reviewed Active Park Assist, and an upgraded version of the SYNC infotainment system. In the highly contentious compact-SUV class, they compete against the Toyota RAV4, the Honda CR-V, the Hyundai Tucson, and the new-for-2010 GMC Terrain. The base Mariner starts at $23,560, and the Mariner Hybrid at $30,105.The traditional, upright lines of the 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid disguise their actual personas: They’re carlike crossovers. A Mariner makes no attempt to soften its lines, unlike such competitors as the Honda CR-V; it’s an SUV from any angle. But the tasteful chrome grille and other fashion-forward design elements set it apart from the more pedestrian Ford Escape, with which it shares a platform. Inside, materials and appointments were extensively upgraded a few years ago, giving the Mariner pair both matte metallic accents and a two-tiered instrument panel. All three powertrains for the the 2010 Mercury Mariner were overhauled last year to deliver better fuel economy and more power. The standard engine on the 2010 Mariner is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 171 horsepower. For more heft, a 3.0-liter V-6 makes 240 horsepower; this is the choice if you need towing ability. Both engines come with a responsive and fuel-efficient six-speed automatic, and the smaller engine can also be paired with a five-speed manual.On-demand four-wheel drive is available with either engine, but don’t be confused-the Mariner is hardly designed for off-road use. The added traction is meant for gravel driveways, muddy parking lots, and snowy suburban streets.Gas mileage varies among versions, depending on which engine and transmission are fitted and whether the Mariner comes with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The four-cylinder paired with the automatic (we expect few orders for the five-speed manual) is EPA-rated at 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. With the V-6, six-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive, it returns a respectable 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. If maximum economy is your goal, the 2010 Mercury Mariner Hybrid is fitted with Ford’s sophisticated hybrid-electric powertrain. Its durability has been proven over many years of use, including combat duty in New York City taxi fleets. It pairs a specially tuned version of the 2.5-liter four with a hybrid transmission incorporating electric motors that both power the car and recharge the nickel-metal-hydride battery pack over the rear axle. The Mariner Hybrid is rated at 34 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, though gas mileage falls to 30 mpg city, 27 mpg highway if four-wheel drive is specified. For 2010, the hybrid model’s air-conditioning compressor is now electric, so cool air continues to flow even when the engine switches off to let the Mariner Hybrid run in all-electric mode. The 2010 Mariner and Mariner Hybrid provide ample room for four adults, but getting three across into the rear bench seat is best confined to shorter trips. The front seats are comfortable, and the view through the tall, vertical windows lets driver and passengers see well above sedan-roof height. While the rear seats are adequate, their bottom cushions are a bit short for taller adults. With total passenger volume of 100 cubic feet, the Mariner is smaller than some other compact SUVs, including the Honda CR-V and the seven-passenger Toyota RAV4.On-road handling and ride quality are good in both the 2010 Mariner and Mariner Hybrid. They ride and handle much better than earlier models, due to a suspension that was completely retuned last year to refine the ride, with new struts, shock absorbers, and sway bars. Not all is perfect inside, however. TheCarConnection.com’s experts find folding the rear seats to be a challenging and convoluted chore. First, all three headrests have to be removed. Then the rear cushions are folded up on hinges at their leading edge. Each seatback must be released with an individual latch before it can be folded forward. The resulting flat load floor provides up to 66.3 cubic feet of cargo area, but you’re still left with three headrests sliding around the load bay.The 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid get decent marks for safety. Four front airbags are standard, as are side-curtain airbags that extend into the second row. The Mariner earns five stars for frontal and side-impact NHTSA crash tests, and the IIHS gives it "good" ratings (its highest) for front offset and side impact crash safety. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronic stability control are also standard, as is a tire-pressure monitoring system. An available Rear View Camera System is a new option for 2010.The 2010 Mercury Mariner and Mariner Hybrid are at the leading edge in the features race, though many of them are available only as pricey options. Perhaps most important is the SYNC interface and infotainment system that Ford developed with Microsoft. Even beyond the iPod interface is its ability to let drivers operate Bluetooth mobile phones in hands-free mode. SYNC comes with real-time traffic, weather, and information like fuel prices via Sirius Travel Link, another option, integrated into the navigation system, all easily controlled by voice commands. The blue-green instrument lighting is pleasantly easy to read, and some Mariner trim levels offer LED-powered ambient lighting that can be set to one of several different colors. The only feature Mariner lacks is a factory-fitted rear-seat DVD player.
