The protection offered by a manufacturers' car warranty is often one of the reasons why people buy a new car, but what happens when it's taken away? If your car's manufacturers' warranty is due to expire, you could face expensive mechanical and electrical repair bills that would ruin even the best planned motoring budget. Thankfully, UVW is the leading supplier of extended warranty protection and can offer you a great deal on a new policy to save you time, money and hassle when the unexpected happens. As part of the WMS Group, they now have over 85,000 satisfied current policy holders - what's more, they pay all authorised claims within 24 hours upon receipt of receiving the repair invoice!

Peace of mind doesn't have to be expensive though - buy a car warranty direct with UVW starting from less than £170 per year.

With the average family car containing between 5000 and 7000 parts, that's a lot that can go wrong! UVW can cover all cars up to 15 years and 150,000 miles and you will be offered a choice of two claim limits: Current Market Value and £1,000 per claim. Their car warranties (also known as Mechanical Breakdown Insurance policies) will enable you to make an unlimited number of claims for the duration of the policy and they do not apply an excess if you need to claim. If you are looking for a longer term warranty though, don't worry - UVW offer some fantastic incentives such as buying 18 months and receiving 24 months, or receiving 36 months cover for the price of 24! Speak to their sales team today on 0800 021 3030 - they'll be delighted to help you.

Exciting times continue at the WMS Group, with the recent launch of 'Safe&Sound', an innovative and exceptional seven element programme for quality used cars to create consumer confidence and add real value to the car buying process. The 'Safe&Sound' programme includes a wear and tear 6 month all mechanical and electrical warranty*, 60 point vehicle inspection, 6 month recovery package, provenance check (HPI), mileage verification, independent valuation from the UsedCarExpert.co.uk and a dealer buy-back guarantee meaning that the dealer will guarantee to buy back the car, regardless of the age and mileage upon the purchase of another vehicle from them. To confirm the credibility of 'Safe&Sound' the WMS Group are delighted that Sir Stirling Moss OBE, arguably the greatest motor racing driver of all time, a true icon and household name, has personally endorsed the scheme, describing it as 'a winning product for motorists in the UK'.

What is a car warranty?

A car warranty is very much like a type of insurance policy, depending on the warranty you can be covered for electrical or mechanical malfunctions on parts of your vehicle. The warranty protects you and covers the cost of repairs including parts and labour.

Warranty offers when buying a car?

If it\'s a new car that you are buying then almost all of the come with a manufacturer warranty that last for a duration of 3 years. When buying a used car from a Franchised dealer most cars will also come with a Manufacturer-backed warranty and when you buy a car from Independent Dealer or car supermarkets they may also include one but most retailers will try to upsell you a warranty package. There are many variations when it comes to car warranties so it is very important for you to read the fine print, things to look out for are claim limits, excess levels, detailed cover report and other related conditions. If you are purchasing an import, most European cars come with a one year manufacturer warranty.

So What is covered in a warranty?

It is very important to look into all details of a car warranty, the better warranties are ones that cover major areas such as:-
  • Engine
  • Cooling system
  • Gearbox and Transmission
  • Brakes
  • Steering
  • Suspension
  • Electrics
  • Clutch Elements
  • Ignition and Fuel systems
There are a few other things to look out for:-

Betterment is something to look out for. Let\'s say you need a new part and your car is fitted with a better one than was previously installed, you are required to contribute towards the cost of this part and in some cases some of the labour costs.

Check to see if you are still covered if a non-insured part damages a covered one. This can also be applied to Oil Leaks

One final thing to look at is the Wear and Tear cover. It can be very easy for a Warranty Company to reject a claim because of natural wear and tear based on the age or the mileage of your car. Make sure you check the level of cover and what you might have to contribute to in the case of claim. There may also be a period of time before you are able to make a claim.

So it is important to find out exactly what is excluded, if you have an older vehicle or have high mileage your cover period may be shorter that regular used car warranties. If you have a Sports car or high performance vehicle, check to see if specialist parts are included.

Beware: Your warranty may be invalid if you have not been to an approved dealer when getting car servicing or if you have exceeded the mileage or date of servicing. Make sure to get your log book stamped and keep all the paperwork in case a warranty claim is made in the future.

Just like you would be with health insurance, if your car has a Pre-existing condition it is unlikely to be covered.

If you need to get your car repaired make sure that you are going to the right type of garage, if it is possible to go to an independent garage you may be able to save substantial costs in labour.

Check to see if there is a limited payout on claims, there may be a limit on each part or an overall limit. This limit can be very low sometimes and simply not worth the cost of the Car Warranty Policy!

If parts cost more than the estimated value of the car you may not be covered.

Check to see if there is a limit to the amount of claims that can be made in a year.

There may also be a charge if you need to transfer a policy and not all warranties are transferable.

Car Warranties in the UK

There are guidelines on how warranties are to be sold set out by ABI (The Association of British Insurer\'s) When you buy a car warranty, check that they abide by the ABI code and are regulated by the FSA (Financial Services Authority).

Do I need a Warranty?

When you buy used cars they can come with big savings but unlike new cars if there is a problem with the car it could cost you lots to repair.

It\'s not common knowledge that used car warranty policies are available and can save you lots of money in the event of vehicle problems that result in a claim.

Car Insurance is a legal requirement but a car warranty also know as Mechanical Breakdown Insurance or MBI is not, so make sure you factor in the cost for your warranty before buying your car.

Car Warranty Types

Here is a list of car warranty coverage available:-

Manufacturer Warranties

Most of the used cars sold at a franchised dealership are classed as approved because they have the manufacturer\'s endorsement.

Most manufacturer warranties offer breakdown cover and include the cost of a hire car and hotel bills. The warranty is able to guarantee the vehicle history and the dealership can vouch for the pre-sale inspection.

Limits of mileage can be imposed on some manufacturer warranties so keep an eye on that one and if you think you are going to pass it, talk it over with them so the policy is still valid because if the car breaches the terms and conditions of the warranty then claims may be rejected.

Also make sure you take good care of your car, being neglectful and causing your car to worsen may invalidate your policy.

Dealer Warranties

If you are buying a car from an independent dealership or from a car supermarket, there is a high probability they will offer some type of warranty, although this may come at an extra cost.

It\'s good to remember that when you buy a car from one of these dealers you do have some degree of protection from the Sale of Goods Act much like the protection of buying a Lemon car in the United States which protects you when buying a car that is not in satisfactory condition at the point of sale. In the UK this protection lasts for three months.

Before you buy the warranty offered by the dealer, shop around to see if a better car warranty is available, calculate the cost compared to what the cost of the car would be without the dealership warranty, there could be a substantial difference.

Unlike a franchised / manufacturer warranty, you may be able to have a car service carried out at a smaller garage to save money.

After Market Warranties and the Extended Car Warranty

The aftermarket warranty is the least known out of all warranties and can be purchased when buying a car privately or for your current car. Yes much like you have a warranty with a new car or approved car, you can also be covered with most used cars. Each policy is different and can have many pros and cons.

If you car is over three years old then it will need to have a current MoT test certificate and some form of proof that it has been serviced.

The cost of the car warranty varies and depends on key factors such as mileage, engine size and specification.

When buying a warranty yourself, look through the policy thoroughly before signing.

Breakdown Cover

Some breakdown recovery providers have Breakdown Repair Cover and Parts & Labour Cover but they do not cover you if you are not on a journey at the time you breakdown, so if your car is in the driveway and you can\'t get it to start then you will not be a able to make a successful claim.
