More than two out of three parents with kids living at home have admitted to speeding on Queensland roads, according to research by NRMA Insurance.
Brisbane, QLD (PRWEB) June 6, 2009 -- More than two out of three parents with kids living at home have admitted to speeding on Queensland roads, according to research by car insurance provider NRMA Insurance.
The research revealed stress and busy schedules may be prompting parents to break the law, with more than a quarter saying they sped because they were running late or in a hurry.
NRMA Insurance spokesperson Frank Adler said parents were the most likely drivers to blame speeding on being frazzled.
"Many families are time poor and under pressure, but running late or needing to get somewhere in a hurry is no excuse for any of us to speed," he said.
"It was disappointing, and a little alarming, to discover people with kids living at home were more likely to speed than those without.
"As parents, we should be trying to keep ourselves and our kids safe, and we should also be mindful of the example we set for our kids, especially if we’re driving with them."
According to Queensland Transport data, speeding is a factor in about 25 per cent of deaths on Queensland roads.
"Regardless of how good a driver you may think you are, the reality is the faster you’re going, the longer you will take to stop and the harder you will hit other objects," Mr Adler said.
The top reasons parents gave for breaking the road rules were:
| | - running late/ in a hurry (26 per cent)
- I only break the rules when safe to do so (22 per cent)
- convenience (19 per cent)
- loss of concentration (16 per cent)
- sometimes it’s unavoidable (13 per cent)
|
"It may be difficult for many parents to avoid feeling rushed and stressed, especially when different family members need to be in different places at the same time," Mr Adler said.
"But it’s safer to try and find time somewhere else in the schedule, rather than try and save time by speeding on the road."
