2002 BMW 7 Series Car Review

Overall Rating 4 Stars
Description
The design of the new BMW 7 Series has created quite a stir and much talk from critics, however BMW released the new 5 Series, 6 Series, 1 Series and Z4 and the 7 Series saloon does not stand out as much as it did. When you look at the 7 Series under the surface it is filled with innovative and unconventional ideas.

Road Test
When the design of the new BMW 7 Series was unveiled it would be fair to say the public were not convinced it was to their taste as it was far too futuristic and adventurous. The controls for the i-Drive were way too complex for the auxiliary functions, but thankfully BMW have rectified the issue.

When it comes to optional extras you have a huge choice from a fridge to doors that have a self-closing feature, there is also a long-wheelbase option for the chauffeured class.

Two things that are worth having are the adaptive dampers and the Dynamic Drive system which improve the handling on corners and allow for a smoother body roll.

The BMW 7 Series has some good options for engines, there is a petrol and diesel 3.0 six-cylinder, also a V8 735i and 745i. Most impressive though is the hugely powerful 760i V12 with a massive 445 break horse power!

The BMW 7 Series is effortless to drive despite being a large and heavy car. Bad points to mention are the parking brake with an automatic feature and the gearchange lever for the Steptronic being positioned on the main column.
Positive Points
  • Extreme refinement coupled with fine performance
  • Luxurious interior is quiet and roomier than before
  • Very sturdily built, well finished, very safe
Negative Points
  • Bold styling may offend conservative tastes
  • High tech i-Drive controls are confusing
  • Depreciation likely to be quite steep
