2000 BMW X5 Car Review

Overall Rating 4 Stars
Description
The BMW X5 is a superior drive on the road with amazing handling and extremely rewarding. The X5 is also pretty good as an off-road drive in the eyes of the owners it targets who are more concerned with looks than ability in an urban environment.

Road Test
The BMW X5 does not have the old money heritage that the Land Rover Range Rover has, but the X5 is still seen in the celebrity lifestyle from footballers wives to music videos. You have to pay a pretty sum for the BMW X5 but it does give you a lot of extras in return.

The drive is respectable and has a firm sporty feel which is a welcomed change from the old 4x4s. The X5 has a body roll that is noncommittal with methodical handling on corners. The BMW X5 also has the xDrive that is a four-wheel drive permanent system with more than enough competence off-road than most owners should ever need.

The BMW X5 offers ample power from all engine choices. There are diesels and petrol options in the 3.0 litre six-cylinder engines, there is a choice of V8 petrol engines and the 4.8 litre which is developed by Alpina with 361 break horse power.

The depreciation on the BMW X5 is good so when it comes to spending the high price you are guaranteed to get a good return on a secondhand X5.

With the sports suspension as an extra the already hard ride is increased, there is plenty of room and enough equipment to keep you happy.

BMW have made some new upgrades to the X5 which have introduced a better quality interior and more intuitive controls.
Positive Points
  • 4x4 presence meets executive class refinement and performance
  • A sportier drive than most 4x4s; outstanding turbodiesel
  • Comfortable cabin is generously equipped
Negative Points
  • Petrol models are rather thirsty
  • High prices, new and used
  • Extras push up prices rapidly
