Chevy, Chevrolet History

Chevrolet has a unique history worth knowing all about. Chevrolet was named after its co founder Louis Chevrolet who was a race car driver. The other co founder was the founder of General Motors, William C. Durant. In an effort to save his name and reconstruct his reputation after being rejected from General Motors in 1910, Willam C. Durant wanted to co found Chevy using the designs that Louis Chevrolet had created. The two gentlemen were befriended while Durant was working with Buick and had hired Chevrolet to drive cars.

The first logo that Chevy used was in 1913 and it was called the bowtie. There were various discussions as to how the bowtie was created and the two most popular theories are that it was designed after the Swiss Cross because Chevrolet was a native of Switzerland or it was inspired by French wallpaper in a hotel where Durant once stayed. Durant was truly the backbone of Chevrolet Motors as he traveled to Toronto in Canada to have a meeting with "˜Colonel Sam' McLaughlin to see if they could produce Chevrolet cars in Canada. The meeting was successful and McLaughlin agreed that Chevy cars would be produced these and operated under Laughlin. Interestingly enough, only three years later General Motors bought out these Canadian car companies. Durant once again became part of the company that he founded especially in 1916 when he bought the majority of shares in General Motors. He then became President of the company. In 1918 the first Chevy car was introduced to the North American population. It was the Model D Chevrolet car which had a V8 engine in a four door passenger car. Other popular Chevy cars that were released throughout the years were the Impala in 1958 and the Corvair. During the fifties and the sixties Chevy dominated and influenced the North American automobile market.

One of the most popular designs which was released in 1955 was the Chevy small block V 8 engine design which is still being designed today. Of course it has been updated throughout the years with technological advances but the basic design remains unchanged. These V8 engines are currently being utilized in Chevy's popular Impala Sedan car. It will also be introduced into the new Chevy Camaro which will be released in the year 2009. This Chevy V8 engine design is not only used in Chevy cars but also in the Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac and Holden car designs.

Chevy has been an incredibly popular American car. It is normally toping the list on many top ten lists of the best sold cars, most reliable cars, most sturdy cars and best performing cars lists. Throughout the years Chevy cars have been installing the latest Technologies and has been known as a great family car. From a small dwindling company being used as a ploy to create a new reputation to being one of America's best sold and most reliable cars, Chevrolet has made it a long way and it does not seem to be going away anytime soon.
