Most cars today are built well enough that they can run for over a hundred thousand miles and can last for over a decade. This is a good thing, but if the car isn't placed in its garage frequently, their paint can become sunburned, in a sense. If you can't build a garage, it may be necessary to give the car a new paint job, or take it to a body shop to have it done. A new paint job can make your car look much newer.
It's not too difficult to paint a car; even less so if you've ever had to do other replacements. A home paint job costs less than a professional one, provided you know what you're doing, have all the right matrials and take your time painting your car. There is a system to it - first, you have to remove the finish, cover up what you don't want painted (windows, windshield and mirrors) and then put on the new coat of paint. Two coats are needed for the car - first the primer coat and then the finishing one. A third one is optional to add a gloss. This will help to protect the new paint, just like a normal coat of finish would do.
Using a brush, as would be first instinct, isn't good in this case because the brush isn't smooth and therefore can't give a smooth job to the car.. It's much better to use spray paint via air compressors. These can be either bought or rented, as can normal spray cans. However, the range of colors is rather narrow in spray cans. Wear a respirator when painting your car - this keeps you from inhaling toxic paint fumes, and respirators can bought from automotive stores.
When you visit an auto paint store, talking to the store clerks is a good idea so they can inform you what types and colors of paint are available. They can also point you to quality paint supplies. Lacquer and enamel paint are the two main types of paints that will be offered.
Once you have all the proper tools, the paint, and a respirator, put it in a clean, dry and well ventilated area. To start painting your car, you need to be sure that there's no rust that you may have missed, and that there are no noticeable dents or other things to damage the paint job. Masking tape is the best thing to use to cover up the windows and other non-painted parts. Use a coat of primer, but don't be too eager to sand or apply second coats to the car unless the manufacturing instructions say it's okay. Make sure that any rust has been cleaned and sanded, and that all the body work is done. Use masking tape to cover over those areas that should not be painted. Apply primer on the car, while making sure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations for any sanding or second coats. After the primer is applied on your car, let it dry and start painting. The best way to paint your car is to go lightly in back and forth motions, overlapping the edges. |
