Car Dealers, Illegal Car Dealers

Selling cars without a car dealer's license is illegal in most states. Most states allow individual residents to sell their cars and there is a limit to selling twenty five cars per year in most states before the activity becomes illegal. So why do people run the risk of illegal activities? The answer is for money! Illegal car dealers make a huge profit on the cars they sell and they do not have to report it to the government.

The government is fully aware of this illegal car dealer industry yet what can it do? Most of these illegal car dealers sell cars from vacant lots, residences or on the side of the street. Once the transaction has been made (in cash of course) the two parties disappear. Most often the car consumer is left with a piece of junk and no one to blame and the illegal car dealer makes off like a bandit.

Selling cars illegal mostly goes unnoticed because the illegal car dealer makes sure that there is no way to trace himself even if this means lying and creating false information. One downside to not having a car dealer's license is that is limits the car dealer from making purchases at new car dealerships and at auctions. There are actually more disadvantages than advantages to selling cars illegally.

These people who are selling cars illegally are known as curbsiders or curbstoners. A curbsider or curbstoner is a person who offers to sell motor vehicles to the public with the sole intention of only making a profit while not staying around for the consequences of the vehicle. For example a curbsider, who posses as being a car dealer, will sell the car and when the consumer has a doubt or a problem with the car, the "car dealer" has no idea what the consumer is talking about and refuses to acknowledge the problem or simply ignores the consumer, if the consumer can even relocate the "car dealer".

There are two ways how a curbsider works. One: he or she is a person who sells motor vehicles on a daily basis but is not a registered member under the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act in which one must be registered in order to sell motor vehicles.

The second type of curbsider or curbstoner is the person who is a car dealer but who acts as if he or she was a private citizen wanting to sell his or her car, while secretly he or she is a registered member of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act. These people have the power to buy cars at a low discount rate from other dealers and auctions and sell the cars making huge profits.

Once again car dealers who do sell cars illegally can get into big trouble. The requirements for a car dealer's license are not very difficult to obtain and one ends up benefiting more from getting his or her car dealer's license. There really are no excuses and this illegal activity should be stopped so that innocent bystanders do not get cheated.
