2008 Bentley Brooklands Review
The 2008 Bentley Brooklands is a top of the line luxury coupe that is mostly hand built and to the highest standard of which the cost of the car reflects that. The Brooklands is a 4 seated car with good performance and a prestigious feel. There are three vehicles in Bentley''s range that predate the Volkswagen ownership days, the Arnage, Azure and the Brooklands. The new Bentley Brooklands is a bit bigger than the Continental GT and the car has been targeted to more exclusive owners. Bentley have been clever when styling the Brooklands as they have modelled it on the successful Continental GT which has been favoured by many a celebrity since its launch in 2004The Continental GT is based on the VW Phaeton and but this has changed for the Brooklands which is heavier and driven by a real wheel 530 break horsepower V8 6.8-liter engine twin-turbo with 774 pound-feet of torque. There has never been a production V8 that has produced that much torque. All this power is driven with a transmission that is an six-speed automatic and fitted with huge 20 inch tyres. The Bentley factory in Crewe, Cheshire is still manufacturing each and every vehicle by hand which gives it that extra special feel when complete. The 2008 Bentley Brooklands is a hardtop through and through which is evident due to the lack of centre window post, the interior polished wood and soft leather is beautiful. There are electric adjustable back seats designed in a bucket shape. As to be expected with Bentley the interior is entirely customisable from the trim and wood type to the colour of the carpets and seatbelts.Going back in Bentley''s motoring history to the 1920s, there was a famous racetrack called the Brooklands where Bentley won an important race therefore the car is named after this race track. The roof liner inside the 2008 Bentley Brooklands consists 7 strips of leather about 6 feet long stretching from the front of the car to the back. The 2008 Bentley Brooklands base was modelled on the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph which was a previous failure but is unlikely to follow down that path, there will only be a limited 550 Brooklands produced over a 3 year time frame and this has attrctd attention to those looking for something unique. The 2008 Bentley Brooklands is likely to be released sometime in late 2008.

The History of BentleyBefore the First World War French D.F.P. cars were being sold by two brothers, W.O. Bentley and H.M. Bentley but the desire to design and produce a whole range of vehicles with the Bentley name on them was always on Walter Owen Bentley''s mind.
Bentley Motors Ltd was created in 1919 and the first Bentley chassis was made and fitted with a dummy engine so that it could be shown at the London Motor Show. By then end of the year an engine was successfully built which paved the way for advanced orders of the Bentley car with a delivery date of June 1920. Unfortunately due to an underestimated production time the first vehicles were not available until September 1921.
In 1925 a millionaire called Woolf Barnato was asked by Bentley to help the company as it was short of funds. Bentley accepted a re-financing deal from Barnato who effectively owned the business and as a result of this became the chairman of the company. Barnato sunk a large portion of his fortune into the survival of Bentley but nothing could stop the Great Depression from destroying any hopes for a demand in cars for sale, the products were just to expensive to afford and by 1931 Rolls-Royce bought the company.
A group of extremely rich British devoted automobile enthusiasts dubbed the "Bentley Boys" were to highlight the high performance of the cars. A famous bet was placed between Barnato and Le Train Bleu, the first leg was from to Calais, they then boarded a ferry to Dover and the last leg was directly to London. Barnato won the race and the Blue Train Bentley was the name given to the 6 1/2 Litre car.
Between 1927 and 1930 the Bentley Boys dedication to racing would see them win the 24 hours Le Mans four years in a row. Bugatti were the toughest competitor at the time with a lightweight car that was also nice to look. The Bugatti car was a fragile construction compared to the Bentley which was know for its durability and reliability but they would also be referred to as "the world''s fastest lorries"
The first Bentley was a the 3 litre, customers demands for a larger engine due to heavier bodies being fitted to the chassis were met with a 4 1/2 litre model. The "Blower Bentley" was the most iconic model at the time it had a supercharger at the lower part of the grille that projecting forward. The 6 1/2 Litre version was used as the Racing car as it was more robust. The Bentley was later famous for its use in the James Bond novels but was not used in the film but it was used in the TV popular series "The Avengers" by John Steed.
Unknown to Bentley a company called the British Central Equitable Trust was secretly owned by Rolls-Royce and this was later revealed after Bentley was sold to them.
Bentley Motors Ltd was created in 1931 which was solely owned by Rolls-Royce and W.O. Bentley still worked for Bentley for a few more years and then left in 1935 when is contract was over. W.O. Bentley joined Lagonda that year.
The Bentley Factory in Cricklewood was shutdown and sold with the vehicle production being moved to Derby where the current Rolls-Royce factory was situated. In 1933 a new Bentley was available, it was a 3 1/2 Litre version which was a 20/25 Rolls-Royce in a sportier variant. The traditional customers of the Bentley were not overly happy with the changes but otherwise it was well received overall. W.O. Bentley was famous for saying "Taking all things into consideration, I would rather own this Bentley than any other car produced under that name."
Crewe in Cheshire would be the new home for the production of Bentley and Rolls-Royce after the Second World War in an ex-wartime engine factory. Unfortunately the Bentley design was gradually being diminished as Rolls-Royce influence the designs without the distinctive grille. Prices of the Bentley were reduced in the 70''s and by the early 80''s the sales of Bentley had fallen so much that production of vehicles from the factory bearing the Bentley badge were less than 5%.
Aero engine development saw the failure of the parent company in 1970. Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd was created to take on the car division and was an independent business until 1980 when Vickers bought it.
The Bentley Mulsanne was the rebirth of Bentley high performance cars in 1980. With a new sporty look the Bentley had renewed interest and sales started to increase. Production of Bentley cars was 40% compared to Rolls-Royce in 1986 and by 1991 there were an even amount of cars being produced for both brands.
The Volkswagen Group out bid BMW to purchased Bentley Motors and Rolls-Royce in 1998 from Vickers for the sum of £430 million. BMW wanted the motor companies as it had already started to supply components for the current range of cars which included the V8 engines for the Bentley Arnage and also the V12 engines for the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. Interestingly enough VW did not purchase the Rolls-Royce name and it was licensed to BMW for the sum of £40 million.
After an agreement between BMW and Volkswagen it was decided that after 2002 BMW would have the sole rights to build Rolls-Royce cars but until then Volkswagen could manufacture both Bentley and Rolls-Royce cars. Slowly Volkswagen decreased its use of BMW components and by 2003 the Bentley cars no longer used the BMW engines.
For the Golden Jubilee in 2002 Queen Elizabeth II was given an official Bentley State Limousine as a celebration gift.
The production of the Bentley Azure convertible was stopped in 2003 and a new Bentley Continental GT was launched as a luxury coupe with a VW W-12 engine.
The factory in Crewe, Cheshire was so busy with orders that they were unable to keep up with demand resulting in over a year''s waiting list for a new car even though the factory was able to produce 9500 units per year. As a direct result of this the new Continental Flying Spur which was a 4 door version of the Continental GT needed to be produced over at the VW factory where the VW Phaeton was being made.
Once production had caught up in 2006 the production of the Continental Flying Spur was relocated back to the factory in Crewe.
A new convertible with 4 seats was confirmed in 2005 called the Bentley Azure which stemmed from a Bentley Arnage prototype and in autumn of 2005 a Continental GT convertible also known as the Continental GTC was shown and production began in 2006 for both vehicles.
Sales continued to grow for Bentley with 8,627 cars sold worldwide in 2005 of which over 40% were sold in the United States. For the first time ever Bentley produced over 10,000 units in 2007 and this resulted in record profits of €155 million.
A new halo model became priority for Bentley which will replace the Bentley Arnage following the success of the Continental GT, GTC and Flying Spur. It is also needed in order to compete with the latest arrivals from Maybach and Rolls-Royce.
The new Arnage based on a similar chassis as the future Audi A8 and styling cues from the Bentley State Limousine and should be ready by 2010. |
